ABOUT DOWNTOWN HISTORIC MANCHESTER

Rickcuttingwood

Downtown Historic Manchester is part of the 175 acres of the Cheney Brothers National Historic Landmark District. The Cheney Brothers became world famous at the turn of the century for premium quality silk thread and fabrics as well as for the creation of innovative silk processing techniques. The Cheney Brothers were renowned as well for their generosity and public spiritedness by building over the course of fifty years a “model community” of workers’ housing, schools, Cheney Hall, a public library, the Hall of Records, public utilities and land for churches and parks. Currently Manchester’s downtown Main Street is lined with historic buildings from this era.

Today, downtown Manchester is the historic commercial center of Manchester. Its broad Main Street and quaint side streets are lined with turn-of-the-century brick buildings that are home to generations of businesses. It is truly “A City of Village Charm.” Historic Downtown Manchester is a vibrant, mixed-use commercial district of retail, office and residential life. Given Manchester’s illustrious past, Imagine Main Street “aspires to inspire” the creative art community of Manchester today. Together, Imagine Main Street, other town organizations and the artistic community become a catalyst for economic development and business growth in the downtown district of Historic Manchester.
